swimming pool ventilation for dehumidification without Air Conditioniong or desiccants.

I am trying to quantify an air change rate to provide heat and humidity relief in a pool area. See photo. It is strictly used in the late spring - summer - early fall when ambient is reasonable. Chicago area. There is no air conditioning at all. Gets very hot and humid. Windows are operable and there are some wind turbine ventilators in the roof. There is also a small exhaust fan on the far wall.

I am thinking of installing intake louvers on the far wall and exhaust on the near wall (not in the photo) to sweep the whole room. I am trying to quantify what would be appropriate. This is a low-budget project. 7,500 CFM gives me 4 air changes per hour. Was going to put the fan on a VFD for operator control.

Any ideas?

I have seen this attempted already. No way can it really control humidity. The best you can do is to match outdoor conditions by bringing in a shipload of outside air. You would have to take the roof off for it to be practical. What happens is that all metal in even remote contact with the chlorinated water is corroded, even chrome plated ladders. The solution to any engineering project can be correct, fast or cheap. Choose any 2.

If you can figure out how to control humidity by simply ventilating the area, please contact me. We will go into business together and put those bums at Carrier, Trane and Lennox out of business.
 
Ventilation to control moisture will depend strongly on what the local db/wb conditions are.

Chicago has pretty high wb in all seasons but winter.

Well this is an engineering site so think about some numbers.

What temperature is"reasonable" ambient. What is RH or WB and DB temp

What is "very hot and humid"?
What temp is swimming pool water?

Is there any low cost source of cold water? that is at least 5C lower than ambient air temp?

Only then can you start to work out if your scheme helps. At the least I would put three or four blowers along the roof and louvres along the wall to generate an air flow. 4 acph seems low for such an environment. If you want to alter humidity then you'll need a source of cold fluid. Normally this is via a chiller. Evaporative coolers don't work well at high WB temps or high humidity levels.

You will need most of the time the assistance of an AC to lessen moisture content within the pool area for the Chicago area subject to the conditions that you described in your OP. The proposed ventilation will bring only cool down the human bodies coming out of the water due to the air flow across the room and reduce the chlorine concentration. If you want quantative values as to the effect of ventilation on humidity within the pool enclosure I suggest that you read on mass transfer which is normally referenced in heat transfer text books.
 
If exhausting properly to remove any added moisture to the room from the pool, the room would have the same RH as outside. Which means, on a very humid day, it will be very humid inside. This is a natatorium, calculate how much water is evaporated off the pool to determine the optimal flow rate required. I would definately suggest some hvls fans.

Maybe look at some kind of desiccant wheel without cooling? Space seems to be at a premium, so I don't know where you would put this. With enough airflow, the room would have any added water from the pool removed, and maybe the wheel would reduce the amount of humidity from the outside air. I've never done or looked into this, so no idea if this will even work, but it may be an option.
