We are planning on utilizing a few pneumatic diaphragm pumps which will be discharging into a pressurized drain system. We currently have swing type check valves in the discharge of the pumps (as all lines entering the pressurized drain system have check valves).

Is there any good reason why we shouldn't use swing check valves in the discharge line? Like because its in reciprocating service and may wear excessively?

Thanks

Hey processeng2014,

I wouldn't worry about the wear, but a cwing check can cause hammers if backflow closes it too quick. It isnt clear the process contitions for your service or criticality. Process PD pump piping deserves some attention because of pulsation, premature pump or relief system failures, etc.

With respect to backflow, most diaghram pumps have internal ball or lift check valves essentual to their method of operation.

Good luch,

The risk of clanging in a swing check at low flow is much higher than with a dual plate check valve on a horizontal pipe run.
A discharge pulsation dampener can also further help to smoothen out the flow pulsations with this pump.

Agree with George, consider installing a pulsation dampener. Swing checks are normally used on larger pumps. Consider installing a silent check valve.
