Switch or Transmitter in Safety instrumented System (Codes/Standars)

Hi all,

In these last years the use of transmitters when safety matters replace mechanical switchs, is there any standards/codes that stipulates this new philosophy or it is considered as only a best practice?

Thank You for your answer in ANSI/ISA-84 (Functional Safety: Safety Instrumented Systems for the process Industry Sector) it's montionned in N.8.3 Sensor selection criteria that Analog devices are generally preferred to discrete devices because the use of the analog signal allows for online detection of device faults.
