Hi,

I'm using complex 3d models from Pro E. I don't have access to Design Modeller, and I would like to use symmetry conditions in my fea model. Can I define symmetry constraints on a full model in Ansys or WB?

Hi,
the sentence is a bit contradictory: "symmetry in a full model" ?
If you want to take advantage of symmetry, you have to "cut" your model properly inside Pro/E.
Then, both in WB and in Classical, there are plenty of ways to symmetrize an analysis. Unless you are already using v.11, the built-in symm options in WB are a bit limited and work correctly only for plane-symmetry. I think you'd better set up symmetry or cyclic-symmetry just like you would in Classical, it's far safer; in order to do that, you use a Commands snippet.
No limitation in Classical: it does everything...

You can always apply a frictionless support, that fixes all into/out-of the plane displacements...which is the same as a frictionless constraint in ANSYS Classic.

Just cut up the geometry, and apply a frictionless constraint.

Good Luck,
Doug

Hi,
Doug, yes, it's the simplest way but it applies only to the cases where no out-of-plane displacement is physically possible. In many cases, this assumption is not correct and so the only way to build up symmetry / antimetry is via CP, CE.
Whenever it is possible to have plane symmetry / antimetry, in addition, WB offers the proper command (add "Symmetry" Object in the tree).
