Dear Sirs,

We are about to weld a 15E Material (pipe-elbow - diameter 16 inch/thickness 87mm) and we tack a small piece with the same material,
just above the groove of the base metal.
My question is, did we do a right location of the tack weld? if not, where is the proper location of a tackweld.
Is there any basis in ASME regarding this situation.

Temporary or permanent tack welds can be used at any location with limits placed by the code of construction and ASME Section IX.

You REALLY REALLY need to think twice, then ask your foremen and pipefitters before specifying the location of a tack weld on a dwg or fab procedure.

Unless it is a very, very weird procedure or process, tack welds are temporary, used to fix or location the parts. They have to be fast, temporary and are almost done before things move or shift. Almost always required to be ground off - not consumed by the first root pass in most codes. Because the tacks are gground off before the root pass envelopes them, the have to be at an accessible point on the joint, a point where th ejigs,, fixture, completed root welds, and all temporary gear both allows access to weld the tack, then leave access to grind it back off. few engineers have the judgement and knowledge to determine those spots.
