We need to identify all the valves and instruments in the process, both at the physical locations and on the P&IDs. Does anybody have any general suggestions for this? What would a suitable numbering system be?

Also, on these slides:

they show various instruments around one device using the same number (slide 5). Is this best practice?

In addition to the letters, each device within an loop carry the same number - the loop number.

Instrument numbers may be structured to identify the lop location.
A good approach is to tie the PID number to a particular area (physical location), and then to sequentially number the instruments on that PID. For example, PID 25 carries up to 100 loops, or instrument loop numbers 2500 to 2599.
