Hello all,

I have a pipe of 16" diameter. A lug on the pipe and distance from center of the pipe to lug is r=12. A link (l=12") is attached on the pipe lug and attached on to an actuator positioned at distance d=12" from the center of the pipe. Actuator is rotating the pipe, 60 degree in up position and -70 degree in down position. I need to calculate the tangential force, force that makes the pipe to rotate. I need to do that so I come up with a scenario when the forces are balanced in up position and down position.

Please see attachement for a sketch.
Can somebody please enlighten me?

Hi Cristol

I don't fully understand your sketch, where is the actuator
situated and what is it a peumatic cylinder?
If it is a cylinder we need to know the size and pressure
your using to operate the lug on the pipe.

I looked at your calculation file and F2 is simply F1*Cos [α] as you have stated.
Wouldn't it be easier just to draw a line perpendicular to the line of F2 and through the pivot point giving you the distance you need to find the torque required instead of all the maths your going through?
Incidentally the maths is only good for that position the mechanism is in currently, you need to do various positions
to check the torque requirements.
