Dear all,
Please can anyone help me on this. I have been given a job by my company to produce drawings for a portable water storage tank. The nominal capacity is 1668m3. Design pressure is HYDR. barg. The design temperature is 65 degree celcius. I have also been given a P&ID showing the connections. I wish to know where to exactly position the nozzles and manholes including their orientations?

If you are working for the project engineering company, you will need the plant or unit layout showing plan views of the piperacks or pipeways. Nozzle orientation should attempt to match those lineups.

Elevations of nozzles depend on the function of the line entering and lo, lo-lo, hi and hi-hi tank level specifications and function of each line. Have a talk with the engineer responsible for process function to determine the correct elevations of the nozzles.

As Big Inch indicated, you will need to have a fairly good idea of the pipe routing to and from the tank in order to locate the nozzles.
Depending on your manway elevations, you need to locate where they are accessible from ground or platform elevations. If not readily accessible from ground you will need to consider accessibility for JLG, forklift or scaffolding to access manways.
Always add at least one spare connection on top and sidewall. Spare connections must be accessible for future use.

Bottomline--You need to do research and preliminary layout of piping.
Are pumps required?? Need to locate pumps in accessible area.
Does your tank require stairs or ladder??
Where are you going to drain tank??
Need to watch pipe routing with respect to head clearance around tank.
Access and safety is paramount.
 

"Portable" tank with a volume of 1668 m3 for warm water ?
 
25362, the water is cold water and not warm water, but the project is to be executed in the equatorial region with high temperatures in some seasons. The 60 degees design temperature is for safety purposes.
 

May0511, kindly explain the tank's "portability" considering its more-than-440,000 (US)gallon capacity. Is it bullet-type or vertical cylindrical ?
 
A few other items to consider:
1. If the tank requires visual level indicator(s), than the appropriate nozzles must be located such that the indicators are easily readible from operator's viewpoint (usually at pumps)
2. In the U.S., a large tank would require a handrail around top perimeter of tank. Most companies have a standard detail of handrail. Route any piping to/from top of tank as not to interfere with the handrail. Piping can be above, below, or between horizontal members of handrail.
I do not know about requirements outside of country but I would recommend handrail. Safety is paramount.
3. Will the tank have a walkway or platform on top of the tank. Nozzles must be located to clear walkways but be accessible.
4. Most large tanks will have a manway located on top of the tank. The manway must be located as to be accessible and ample clearance for the manway door to open fully
 
Currently, tanks in the US do not necessarily require a handrail all around- depends on the frequency of access and on what parts of the roof need access.

Usually, some attempt is made to separate inlets and outlets to help maintain circulation. Put the ladder and one manway where it is most accessible to users, with another manway on the back side. Put overflow on the downhill side or whichever direction water would need to drain to.

Typically, all shell nozzles will be radial. If freezing is a concern, connections can be underground. Preferably keep shell nozzles and manways separated by several feet so repads don't interfere with each other.
