I want to design a storage tank with atmospheric pressure per API standard, the formula does not include any pressure. Can anyone tell me upto what pressure can I use formula for storage tanks.
Flat-bottom vertical tanks are designed for the hydrostatic pressure existing in them, and will have shells of varying thickness to account for that pressure.
You can also design API-650 tanks for gas pressure above the fluid up to 2.5 PSI. You can design similar tanks to API-620 up to 15.0 PSI. You can design similar tanks for higher pressure per ASME B&PV code if required.
Be very careful about specifying pressures for larger diameter tanks. While API-650 and 620 allow pressures up to 2.5 PSI and 15 PSI, tank reinforcing and anchorage may become totally unreasonable at those pressures for a tank of any size. Preferably work with a tank designer to confirm that the proposed pressure is not a design headache on the tank end.
Large-diameter tanks which are not specifically designed for pressure are typically good for pressures slightly above the weight of the roof plate, or 7-8 PSF (not PSI).
