I know this is not that big of a deal, but I used live near here and for the locals, this is a really big deal:

Fuel tanker overturns, closing US-41 in Hancock

While the accident closed US-41, the main highway through town, it was the few thousand gallons of gasoline that was spilled which was the biggest concern for the local people as it poured into the storm drain system and eventually spilling into Portage Lake, which separates the cities of Houghton and Hancock, in Michigan's UP (Upper Peninsula):

The ellipse is where the accident was and the arrow is where the storm drain poured into the lake.

Note that a month from now, during the week of July 18th, my wife and I (and much of our family) will be in the Houghton/Hancock area.

The environmental impact will be minimal as the gasoline will quickly evaporate but everybody must be biting their nails for fear if ignition as long as it's making a sheen like that.

This happened two days ago and as of this morning, the local paper had nothing new to report so I guess they lucked out, but they did warn people not to take any boats out for a day or two.

Lighter products can spread themselves so thin so quickly that as long as they're not impinging on a shoreline it something they can eliminate themselves fairly quickly. It goes back to the old saying, "dilution is the solution to pollution".
Not the ideal situation but what are you going to do?

A little trivia, did you know that the LD50 for gasoline is about twice that of drankin' alcohol (ethanol) with higher LD50 indicating lower acute toxicity?
