Dumb question regarding Teamcenter: If we have various kinds of cad files other than NX (such as Autocad dwgs or SolidWorks models) that require revision control, can Teamcenter be configured to manage them effectively?

Short answer, yes. If you have access to GTAC Services - you can get TeamCenter configuration documentation.

I can't speak to AutoCAD or SolidWorks explicitly, but a very large number of our TeamCenter customers have NO seats of NX and are managing the data and files created by their particular corporate CAD system(s), whatever those systems may be.

Note that one of the reasons why TeamCenter is so widely used in industry (there are more seats of TeamCenter in use around the world than any other PDM system by far, in excess of a million seats) is because of it's dependency on an open architecture which allows it to be adopted to not only manage data from multiple and diverse sources, but it also allows companies to configure it so as to be able to fit into most existing infrastructures with the least need to replace or reimpliment existing systems which may already be meeting the needs of the organization.

The key word I see is "effectively". Most PDM systems can be configured to acess and control data from CAD systems of diferent vendors. The integration is available for most systems. How effective it is is up to your company. I know some companies that use TC for CAD managaement and WIndchill for wider product visablity and I know companies that use Windchill for the CAd and TC for the visibility.

The major concern with third-party PDM is waiting for the integration code to be updated by one party or the other when new releases come out.
