I've recently migrated to Teamcenter and am having a problem I hope you can help with.

We are running NX2 and when I try to copy a 2d drafting object or a solid from the part navigator I get an error. It returns "The part revision must exist in the database before a non-master part can be created".

I'd presume there is a pointer in a .def file somewhere that is telling to to create a new file in Tc when all I really want to do is create a copy of a solid which will then be edited into another detail.

Thanks in advance

If I understand you right, you are trying to copy/paste a UG model in Teamcenter. Be aware that in Teamcenter that you are not copy/pasting objects like you do on the operating system. All you are doing is copying the LINK to the dataset. So when you go to the solid you think you have copied and edit it, the original changes too. It took quite a while to get this concept into people's heads here.
The only reliable way I know to do this is to save the part out onto the OS and reimort it to the new item/revision. You can do the export from UG, or in TCE right-click the UG part, select "Named Reference" from the resulting menu, then highlight the UG part file and click "Export". Then select the new item revision and use File > New > Dataset.

Scotty7,
Thanks for your advice; however I don't think I explained what I'm trying to do as clearly as I should have.

First, you should know that our company doesn't require master modeling (so much to my objection nobody uses it) so most designs are a single model with a multitude of solids/surfaces/drawing sheets/etc. Basically, Tc is only used as a storage system for completed models.

Here is an example of what I'm trying to do... I have a drawing border (or a note/fab instructions/symbol key/whatever) on the face of the drawing. I want to copy it from the current sheet to the next sheet. In ug native I could select the items, cntl c, open the sheet that I wished to copy to, then cntl v.

Could this be done differently, sure. But since the nature of our designs are all very much one of a kind it isn't justifiable to spend time setting up spreadsheets for import.

What is really frustrating is that other drivers within our company can do this hence the reason I'm thinking there is some sort of pointer within a definition file that is trying to send the copied information to Tc instead to a clipboard.

Thanks in advance.

I'm assuming you are running in NX/Manager mode (Teamcenter). Can you select the geometry on the screen then do a Edit->Copy Edit -> Paste to the new drawing?

If this is in Teamcenter already what type of dataset is it? UGMaster or UGPart? it should be a UGMaster if you are not using Master Model.
