technique of grout under baseplate

whats the technique that you use to put leveling grout under base plate? do you first put grout or the baseplate? if you first put the grout.. do you need to put formworks? any grout that doesnt requirement formworks? or do you put the grout after the base plate is put by injecting the grout? and what exact grout do you use? thanks

Usually from the base plate I've had experience with i.e. pump/motor base plate, the base plate is normally put in position and then levelled, bolted down and the grout injected through the frame. Formwork is placed around the base plate after positioning if required.

These include dry packing of grout which is quite stiff, and also flowable grout placement. Flowable grout does require formwork, and hydrostatic head to ensure full coverage. In all instances, the manufacturer's instructions with premixed grout should be followed diligently.

What about putting lean mortar on the surface of the concrete before putting the base plate? What effect would this be?

Putting mortar first would be problematic. The baseplate will go down uneven and shifting, all the grout would get moved out or partially, the column leveled, and now you are left with small voids under the plate which will be impossible to grout. Plus erectors will have to touch concrete and get all dirty!
