Temp. shoring and compaction

My roadway is being constructed in a fill embankment. Construction sequence is proposed to construct half width at a time. Temporary shoring is proposed to protect the embanked roadway (12' higher than existing). While doing the second half how would the required compaction at/near the shoring attained and how is that shoring pulled out? Do anyone share their experience?

Does the shoring actually hold up the roadway or keep the dirt in place??

If you closed the road to traffic - you "might" be able to pull the shoring and then add your fill. I did say "MIGHT"

You could also abandon the shoring in place and simply bury it.

I think a better plan should have been in place before you got to this point.

It will hold the roadway built in the 1st phase.

Depending on the soil and with no traffic - I might guess you could pull the shoring and quickly fill in. Might do it in say 20-40' sections.

However - I am guessing you will also get some differential settlement - regardless.

When you pull the shoring out compaction of the existing embankment will more than likely be compromised. Not sure how you correctly address this issue. Seems like your only solution would be to leave the shoring in.

Did the engineer define the means/methods of this phased construction, or is this really a contractor issue?

Not yet being constructed yet but the engineers has specified the temp shoring. what are the anticipated problem if the temp. shoring is left in place?

If you use sheet piles for shoring, make sure a certain amount sticks when the second half of the roadway is build, then pull the sheets out with a vibratory extractor.

Can you build your fill in lifts reinforced with geotextiles? They'd be part of your permanent embankment, but you wouldn't have to try to yank out sheet pile, or leave piles/lagging in place

Agree with chicopee.....use sheet piling, put in the first side up to the base level. Then fill the 2nd side up to the base level. Extract the sheet piling. Construct the base and surface.

Utilize temp. MSE wall "basket type" filled with graded aggr., filter fabric,.... then the temp. wall is left in place as the adjacent fill is constructed. This is done routinely in my region with good results.

Dozer and Drum have the right idea. MSE wall (with no block/facing) would work and would alleviate need for any shoring.
