Can anyone tell me if there are any issues in designing/fabricating pressure equipment (small vessels and piping items) using stainless steel 316 (not 316L) for the following:-

The mechanical codes are either ASME VIII div1 or ASME B16.3.

Design Temps: Two Options a)538 Deg. C. b) 590 Deg. C

Fluid passing thro' the equipment is steam only.

Thanks in advance.

Check into the ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code, Section II Materials, Part D - Properties, current Edition. I built a table based upon the 1995 edition. My notes reflect a maximum operating temperature of 1500 degree F. However, the allowable stress value avalanges from 11000 psi at 1100 degree F to 4100 psi at 1300 degree F. 590 C is just below 1100 F. Again the current Part D may be helpful.
