Template file mystery

I am trying to import a parasolid asembly into SW2003 SP3.1. When I open the file, the top level assembly uses the designated assembly template, but the component part files do not use the designated part file template.

The desired default template path is set in the system options. I get the same result whether I set to prompt for template or always use specified template.

I searched my entire system and can find no other part templates, so I can't tell where else SW is getting this bogus template from.

I'm not following your problem Tick? Are you getting an error or what? Can you explaing this in more detail?

Just some things to check, because it works fine here in SP3.1 (opening just a parasolid part.

How can you tell that it's not using it, what's different?

How many paths do you have in your Tools\options\Document Properties\File Locations\Document Templates ? Make sure you only have one path.

I don't have an assembly of a parasolid. If you can send me one I'll try it out here.

My template files have custom properties that do not appear in the resultant SW parts. Also, some base features (X, Y, and Z axes) are not present in the translated part files.

A 17KB template file with the "out-of-the-box" settings? I think you are probably getting the default part template. SWX2003 has a new feature - the default template files must always be available. For example, if you remove the default templates from the document template file locations under system options they will be automatically copied into the first file location folder that you have in your list.

You may want to try changing all of the settings in the default template to match your desired part template settings.

Meanwhile, I heard from my VAR, who had forwarded this to the central scrutinizer at SW. Apparently, they know about this problem. The bad news is that they don't consider this to be a regression, so it is lo priority to fix.

Reason for the defaults being required is because if you delete them and then can't access your customs ones (on a net and it goes down, for example) you can't even open SW!!! It happened to us a couple a years ago.

3/4 of all the Spam produced goes to Hawaii - shame that's not true of SPAM also.......

Final word from my VAR on this subject:

This issue is now SPR 175066. It has been upgraded to "regression", meaning something that worked fine in SW2001 that doesn't now and is a high priority fix.

Apparently, SW2003 retains the ability to manufacture templates when none are present. The parasolid translator is accessing this ability instead of using the specified template.
