Tensile testing

I’m trying to answer a question relating to tensile testing and how the results from the test would differ from theoretical. I’m thinking temperature but I’m not sure if there is something more obvious I’m missing?

Your question is way too vague. There are all kinds of reasons your results will differ from theoretical. What are you trying to do?

Pulling on the specimen will shrink the cross sectional area making it hard to know what exactly the area was when yielding or breaking. A poorly aligned machine might bend the specimen.
 
What is the material... there are generally two types of failure... the classic 'cup and cone' and the 'brittle' failure. The cup and cone from ductile materials (actually a composite of shear and brittle) and the brittle from non ductile materials. We need more information.

Rather than think climate change and the corona virus as science, think of it as the wrath of God. Do you feel any better?
