Test for bolt straightness?

Hi all,

It has been requested that we add a test in our quality control to assess the straightness of our bolts and screws. Is there a standard way of performing this type of test, and what kind of equipment will be need to order?

Roll the body on a table top. Kind of informal and hard to measure, but it works.

Order your autofeed equipment with a bent bolt detector.

If you don't have autofeed equipment, ask your operators to drop the bent bolts in the garbage instead of trying to install them. If there's any doubt, they can roll them on their workbench surface as suggested.

In my experience run-out is more commonly specified and measured than straightness. Here is an example of a gage for measuring run-out from Johnson Gage, one of the most respected companies in the area of fastener gaging:
