I just removed my tranmission from my 92 nissan 300zx automatic, It was rebuilt and it seems it was pourley rebuilt. I am know going to just buy a used japanese transmission, and I would like to know if their are places that can test a transmission while its out of the car, and see if it working right? I am in southern california, your response will be greatly appreciated.

I'm not aware of any. There are some air pressure checks you can do to see if the pistons are moving properly, but thats about it. Once the trans is out of the car diagnosis is over, you should know what your going to fix before you take it out.

I've seen several dynamic transmission test stands. Both
of them were for the standard front engine/rear wheel drive
type configuration though and at major transmission
rebuilders machine shops. You might want to look through
these transmission insustry newsletters for some more
information. ATRA (Automatic Transmission Rebuilders
Association) also has a website and an information help
center that may be able to find you something closer to
your location in So Cal.

Dissasembly and inspection could answer your questions, but there might be a considerable cost for labour, oil and gaskets, only to find out it is OK.

Why do you suspect it is no good

Transmission "dynos" are out there. I have only seen one setup at a rebuilder several years ago. Like Chumley says, there out there. Another approach is to go over to Gardena and check out the Japanese engine/trans importer. Can't recall the name and wouldn't know how to spell it if I could. I believe it is on Rosecrans over by Isky Cams. If your SoCal a Thomas Guide will get you there.
The used trans and engines are super cheap for what you get.

Hi Rod. Would you be thinking about

K Watanabe Corp.?

No affiliation.

They import 100,000's of used Japanese built
engines/transmissions of all types directly from Japan.
Not a bad deal in most cases. Most of their inventory
has +-50,000 miles of use.

Yeah. That's it. We bought a 2TG with a close ratio 5 speed and an 18RG with a standard 5 speed both for less than a thousand about 15 (I started to say 10!!!) years ago.
They were cheap because they had no DOT counterpart in the U.S. The twincam turned out to have less than 20,000 miles on it. We put it in a MkII Cortina (Coryota or Toytina???)

Forgive the memory loss, I've been upside down welding a cage all week.
