Every year a good friend of mine, he has 40 years experience. puts on a week long seminar devoted solely to acceptance testing of fire pumps in Ohio.
The class is open to everyone but most of those in attendance are representatives of the state fire marshals office and local authorities having jurisdiction around the state.
What they do is meet at a campus of Ohio University where there are dozens of fire pumps of all shapes and sizes. Ohio State University hosts the class free of charge and what they get in exchange is free annual pump tests.
What is really amazing is it's free of charge to anyone that wants to attend.
Typically they'll get 20 to 40 people attending, spend the morning in a class room setting reviewing the information in the pdf file then break into a half dozen groups who, with a leader in charge, heads out for some real life hands on experience testing fire pumps. There's diesel fire pumps, electric fire pumps, standpipes (they actually test standpipes in a high rise while they are at it) and everyone participates from rolling out hoses to taking pitot readings.
FYI in Ohio when running a pump test the first thing an AHJ will want to see is copies of your gauge certifications... if you don't have them, or they are out of date, the test is over and you can come back on another day.
It's really a lot of fun it's like training a pack of attack dogs for those who would cut corners or don't know what they're doing. On the other hand if an inspector knows what he is doing the class makes acceptance tests a breeze. Just make sure you have your gauge certifications.
