Valveusa:
A general question must give a general answer. A lot will depend on valve specification and end users requirements, including local and general regulations.

Some suggestions, as I assume you ask about high quality valves for petrochemical industry. (Answer is valid anyway):

a) Select a renowned and experienced supplier/foundry, with approved procedures for production and quality control by one of the worlds leading approval companies. Already here the supplier can give you and overview of what they can offer, and what is normally used for different parts and end-uses.

b) Ask your marketing department what the main target customers require and what the competitors can offer.

c) Type of tests might vary from certified tests of tensile tests, complete material analysis, control of procedures of production and state and accuracy of control instruments and valid certifications, dye penetration tests, x-rays, and visual inspections, and probably some others (?) depending of type of product and end use. Similar and other tests might be required under other stages of the production. All tests traceable and non-traceable to given parts as fit/required or normed.

The answer to the original question you ask forms a part of your company's QA-policy and should be approved, understood and accepted from the top (Managing Director/President) and down in your organization.
