tests on steel plates

while steel plates are used for various constructions, what are the various tests(NDT & otherwise)done for material assesment?
are there any chemical tests done on steel plates used for ship construction?

Among the tests required on steel plates for ship construction are Tensile Tests, Charpy V-notch, Ultrasonic (UT), checmical and mechanical properties tests. A couple of good sources for information on steel for shipbuilding are Mil-S-22698 and American Bureau of Shipping (ABS) rules for steel vessels.
