I just found this blog article while reading the Develop3d magazine... its a very interesting article. For me I am not sure what to think about this decision made by Jeff Ray and the Solidworks Team. I hope what ever happens its going to be better than PTC's decision to rename their products to "Oreo"... I mine "Creo".

My discussions with CATIA folk are that indicate they don't like SW.
The same is for CATIA mngmt at Boeing.
I have expected for the past few years that DS will change something about SW , well see...

It's all about SW being replaced by a cloud-based version of Catia, sort of.

I have a cloud-based address book containing about 850 entries, mostly text with a few pictures. It's been 'updating' for about an hour now after a few simple edits. I have a fairly reliable DSL + wireless connection. The cloud server is owned by one of the biggest and most experienced cloud suppliers.

The cloud is clearly not ready to support CAD right now.
Will it be ready, when CAD is ready for it?
I don't think so; it can barely support all the damn iPhones that have been sold so far.

I must be missing something - isn't this what any business (software or otherwise) does as part of normal operating proceedure? Look to the future.
The only question is who gets it right!
