However, I haven't been vault free since 2005, 2006 - something like that. The company I'm at currently doesn't have a vault. And there's really no need either, since I'm basically the only SW user. So, my question, if I keep an older archive folder with previous revisions of parts and drawings, do I need to re-name them since I remember back in the day that revisions from my local hard drive would infect other 'network' files?

I don't think the fact that you're the only designer should preclude you from having a vault. Where you have premium, PDM Workgroup is included and will make it so you don't have to worry about previous rev's infecting the network files. Why not use the tool if it's readily available?

True, it is free and readily available. I'm gonna have to study up on how to set one up.

Workgroup is pretty easy to setup when compared to enterprise, it sure makes storage of revisions and versions of easier.
