What is driving the price of 134A? Last year I bought a couple af cases for about $4.00-$5.00 a can. Today I got sticker shock from the parts store at 14.00 a can, and they said 20# tanks were $300. Is this price jump permanent, or just a short term shortage? Anybody have any reasons?

I dimly recall a rumor that 134a will be phased out. Maybe it's speculation. Maybe it's just a free market responding in the usual way to government twiddling.

The R134a phase out is not a rumor. There is an SAE committee working on replacements. The driving force seems to be Europe and the usual green suspects.
