The significance of FID in relations

Working with a fairly complex relation that has come from a third party for a reptition.

Included in the repetition are the lines:

if 2*parite == idx1
memb_v=sign:FID_CS_ECH_1*corr_x
else
memb_v=-sign:FID_CS_ECH_1*corr_x
endif

CS_ECH is the name of the co-ord sys to be repeated
what is the significance of FID as there is a problem with the secon occurence of this
