The use of numerical analysis

Hi everybody,

I want to know that in practice where do we use numerical modeling in geotechnical engineering? I have lots of experience with F.E. and F.D. methods but it seems that these techniques are not that much in use in practical cases and projects. Any experience? Any suggestion?

Pile driving through various strata; more realistic load capacities on friction pile in various strata; flow nets; stress in various strata; mat foundations; soil structure interaction;....the list goes on.

There are several good texts available on numerical methods and geotechnical engineering. Look them up on Amazon or Borders or Powells....check out ASCE Geotechnical journals. Many, many resources out there - look.

Finite element analyses are used on geotech projects when they are justified by the scale and cost of the project. When they are used it is usually on large projects for large clients. The times I have been involved with geotech finite element projects, the clients have been the US Army Corps of Engineers or a state department of transportation.
