I am working on a thermal expansion estimate of the nozzles on a cylinder vessel for the purpose of piping stress analysis.
Could you please give me some advice or referecne materials to calculate the thermal movement of the nozzles on a vessel.
I appreciate your help greatly!

Thermal expansion = l*alpha*delta T.

TGS4,I agree with you if you mean vessel axial thermal expansion. How to calculate the radial thermal expansion of a cylinder vessel?

Same way. Why would you think it would be different?

Normally there is always a fixed, zero expansion, point on the vessel if carefully designed. Look for it around the supports. Every thing else just expand away from the zero point. Expansion value is just related to the straight-line distance from the zero point plus the temperature change, no matter hollow or solid.

For a free-expanding body then the expansion center is its center of gravity (assuming even material property), hollow or solid no difference.

Related to this topic, I remember a very interesting question people like to ask: if you have a doughnut-shaped piece and heat it up, does the inner hole get larger or smaller? Now you know the answer.

Thanks a lot!
I thought the aixal expansion of a hollow vessel is free but the raidal expansion of a hollow vessel is limited by itself. It seems I am wrong.
