thermostat installation

I have a white-rodgers thermostat for a heat pump tht is 13 years old I want to replace. I can not remove the the plate covering the wires. I have removed the outside cover and revealed the mercury ampules but can not get to the screws on the inside to get to the wires. What is the trick?

Hi Dee Ho, RetFedGolfer,

Depending on the model, the chunk of your t'stat with the mercury bulbs on it may snap off. Look for little screwdriver slots or tabs-n-slots in the seam between the two pieces that are still on the wall.

Some also have tabs-n-slots at bottom and a single captive screw at top.

If all else fails, use a chisel. You're replacing it anyway, and if you're careful enough, you can avoid marring the surrounding wall. If you ding it up anyway, goof plates are available from Honeywell distributors.

OK, I STILL CANN'T REMOVE THE PLATE INSIDE THE COVER TO GET TO THE MOUNTING SCREWS & WIRES. LET'S SAY I PULL THE THING OFF THE WALL TO GET TO THE WIRES. WHAT ABOUT IDENTIFYING THE WIRES FOR CORRECT PLACEMENT INTO THE NEW THERMOSTAT.

Well, IF YOU'RE LUCKY, the existing t'stat is wired according to a normal convention. If you have just a single-stage cooling, single-stage heating application, here's the convention:

R = 24 VAC power from xfmr at furnace (usually red wire)
G = fan relay (usually greeen wire)
Y = cooling compressor or valve (usually yellow wire)
W = heat (usually white wire)

Well maybe I'm not so lucky. Would you give me more info if you know the type of thero. "1f58-910";(lr27935 is also shown!)
