So, you have the thermostat that controls the global average temperature. Do you set it to this year? 1880? Little Ice Age? Holocene Optimum? Medieval Warm period? You choose.

I would go for present day, not because I think warmer is necessarily worse, but simply the law of unintended consequences.

Well that is the justification behind the climate change alarmists' thoughts. We don't know anything but the present. With that said, the data in terms of weather related deaths, indicates a little warmer might be a little better.

In my hotel room right now every evening I find my thermostat set for 68. I dial it up to 72 every night.

We might have to change STP and that may annoy some engineers.

The present day?? With the climate apocalypse upon us? I would choose pre mid 20th century, when extreme weather was 50x less common:

Was the frigid weather that stopped the Nazi advance into Russia not extreme enough to make the chart?

Expert climate scientists and their allied statistical professionals have ensured that events making the list correlate with our current understandings of climate, specifically its catastrophic worsening.

Set it for 2080, to see what the future brings, and act accordingly. [pipe]

my favourite temperature... I'd be happy with that all year round.

ah "STP" ... something very precise, that's meant to represent the real world, but rarely happens (to that precision).
