Does anyone know of a process whereby thin layers (~ 1um) of an elastic material can be deposited on a metal surface? The only requirements would be that it be insulating and elastic. I'm thinking particularly about a process that would possibly be compatible with Chemical Vapor Deposition (CVD)in which thin layers of semiconducting materials are deposited. Is there a CVD-like method for elastomers?

Hi BakerJ,

elastomers are macromolecules and are therefore not volatile through gas phase.

There are IMHO basically two ways to consider. One is application of a liquid elastomer and/or solution in a suitable solvent like a laquer and curing/crosslinking in situ, the other way could be transport of the monomer as a gas to the surface and polymerisation in situ.

The first way is quite common ( even if I do not know about so thin layers), the second way is more exotic.
