I am working on a prject which the architect has a wall system using thin stone veneer (1" thick) applied to rigid insulation which is screwed over a vapor barrier and exterior gyp board into metal studs. Metal lath and a scratch coat is applied over the rigid insulation to adhere the stone. As anyone used such a system? Any thoughts on transfering the weight of the stone back through the insulation to the metal studs or would the weight be transfered directly down thus requiring a lintel at all openings?

I would diddo that basically for a quick answer.

However, you can design the system to be carried just fine by the metal studs. In either case, over openings it would be prudent to use a lintel.

I would investigate carefully what the architect has in mind. If he or a proprietor have a system they are willing to warrant and can show you successful examples of it's use, well....

I would be concerned to break ground on a new wall system without some incentive though.
