thread507-500740Hi,
Hello every one
I'm currently working on a small steel structure that will be built in a large industrial building. How is the lateral load (seismic load-category D) calculated for a structure within a building? is there any section in ASCE7 which related to?

If it is not connected to the main building - I'd design your "mini-building" per ASCE 7 just like any other - just no interior wind load other than the minimum for partition loading perhaps.

If it is connected to the main building - then for gravity design you'd just design it as part of the building as you typically would - but for seismic there may be more complications that would need to be considered - not sure I have the answers for that.

If it is tied in, for seismic you'd have to analyze it for whatever deflection the main building experiences at the tie-in point. Your frame wouild have to be able to go along for the ride without failing. I.e. it deflects more than a typical p-delta analysis for the structure itself.
