Threaded steel pipe for replacement using pipe bursting?

Apologies if this isn't the correct forum - let me know the correct one if this is the case!

We have the thought to replace a 100' long, 16" diameter steel casing pipe with a new same size casing pipe. As the casing pipe runs under a railroad and busy road, open cut isn't considered an option.

To do this, we'll "push" from a pit and "pull" from a manhole; both a pipe bursting head and the new casing pipe will be pulled from the pit. As we're limited in the size of the pit to about 16' in length, I'm trying to find out if it's a better idea to weld or thread together 10-12' sections of steel pipe. Is this a construction issue or an agency specification issue?

Thanks for any help .. I'm a bit out of my comfort zone here!

Your thinking about threading 16" pipe!?? ...To act as casing? Am I getting this right?

weld, don't thread - it will be cheaper

11echo - I sense from the number of question marks that you're being polite :)

Thanks (and to cvg as well of course) for the help! Welding it is!

Well this question is so far out I'm trying to see if I really understand what you proposed to do! The cost of "trying" to thread this size pipe, plus the cost of fittings would FAR out way the normal welding procedure. Then "if" you did thread it trying to drag through joints of piping coupled together would be extremely difficult. ...Do as cvg suggests, save your sanity and pocket book!

to answer your second question, I would specify welding in your specifications and specify minimum diameter, thickness and steel grade for the casing. let the contractor handle the rest.

Perfect - thanks again for your help!
