Hi!

Would anyone please enlighten me as to why three phase motor generators couped with electronic power inverter/ chargers are apparently not often used if used at all in trains? Would'nt such a system be useful in case a parallel hybrid kind of train be put together( as in the electric cars of Honda & Toyota)? Could the Diesel Engine and the main generator (which serve as main power source and transmission system) then be made smaller since the traction motors would transform the trains kuinetic energy into electric energy which could be stored in the battery system by the use of the chargers, and then the power be used by the 3 phase moters for starting and accelerating just like in the hybrid automobiles. What do you think of that? Would it be feasible to run an upward escalator with a downward escalator( so that the operating power would be somewhat less since the weight of the upcoming passengers would more or less be ultimately cancelled by the weight of the downcoming passengers)? Or would the increase in no load starting be too much( since the friction forces of 2 escalators would sort of work in synergy)?
