Hi All,

I have a 4" NPS 900# flanged throttle valve that is cast out of Chrome Moly steel, I have to get a CRN (Alberta)for it.

Question: Is it necessary to have ASME B16.34 calcs for it? Outside of a pressure test,or FEA, is there another test that will possibly deem it okay for a CRN? It has a 5/8" min wall.

Also, is there an ASME standard design guideline for valves?

Thanks!!!

If it fully complies with ASME B16.34 then that is typically sufficient. You, or someone on your companies behalf, have signed the Statutory Declaration stating that you meet B16.34. If something goes wrong there is legal recourse on the purchasers side.

Extra testing is always a benefit but it may or may not be required. A proof test is one way to ensure that it meets code requirements but would be difficult with flanged ends. The flanges start to leak.

Not necessarily, but if you did there would be significantly less questioning by your AI/Registrar. Why is it so difficult to be compliant with B16.34?

FEA is not a test it is a design evaluation. More than likely your AI will require you to burst/proof test this item.

I think you're spending to much effort/time trying to avoid simple tried and true methods that will result in a qualified component.
