I need to estimate the oil pumping effect a plain thrust bearing has due to rotational speed. Then make a qualitative comparison to a similar bearing. Both bearings use the same thrust collars on the active and inactive sides but the babbit surfaces are slightly different.

Any help, quantitative or qualitative, would be appreciated or even a reference that seal with this topic.

When the rotational speed is high, we can expect overheating of the babbitt, also decrease in load-carrying capacity. However the minimum film thickness of the bearing increase and solid contact is prevented.
Low rotational speeds decrease the minimum film thicness and the babbitt can experience damage, also submicronic particles can stay between the contact surfaces.

When the bearing is incorrectly loaded at a given rotational speed, the bearing can experience unstability problems because the stiffness of the system decrease. The damping here relates how the bearing react in terms of load carrying capacity to any film thickness changes.

You should refer to Kingsbury site, where a good review of hydrodynamic bearings and related trouble is given. Also look at "Lubrification hydrodynamic, Paliers et Butées, J.Frêne, D.Nicolas, et al."

You can contact me also, I am working on thrust bearings
