Please advise me on where to find Design Publications, design guides or technical papers on Tiebacks. I am confronted with a soils report which indicates the use of tiebacks to aid retaining walls; and I would like to be well informed, unfortunately I have only shadows of ideas on their design.
(same as posted on Jul 31,2000 on
Home/ForumAreas/StructuralEngineers/Activities/Structural)

Simpleton,

Amoung other publications for the design of soil retaining structures that was mentioned in the structures forum is NAVFAC's Foundations and Earth Structures Design Manual 7.2. Also, there is a publication from ASCE written by the Corps of Engineers specifically for sheet pile walls. Check out ACSE's website and look for publications.

There is also an excellent book by ASCE : Geotechnical Special Publications No. 74. Title "Guidelines of Engineering Practice for Braced and Tied-back Excavation", 160 pp., 1997.
Check with ASCE at <A HREF=" TARGET="_new"> that this help
Regards

You may want to try calling Richard Goettle, Inc. in Cincinnati, Ohio. They do LOTS of tieback work throughout the Midwest and Atlantic Coast.

Ask for any of the project managers.

I would recommend:

"Tiebacks in foundation engineering and construction" by Harry Schnabel, Jr.

I have found it to be a very practical book.

I do not have a copy but have borrowed it from our local university library. It is probabaly available through a Schnabel Foundation Company office.
