Hi, can someone give me a quick rundown about pulse welding when using the TIG process , (AS i have never used it yet), what are the usual frequencies between pulses? and what is the current difference between the high and low peakes?, and what are the advanteges of using this type of welding?, is it recommended for DC TIG Welding or really just for AC?, thanks

There is plenty of technical information available on the internet. Use key words like "GTAW" or "TIG welding" and many web sites will show, including those for welding various materials with GTAW.

Typically you are dealing with low frequencies, say below 500Hz. The low current is usually between 50% and 75% of hte high current. I have alwaysed symetrical pulsing.
Ask the guys that build the welders.

= = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = =
Corrosion never sleeps, but it can be managed.

Pulsed GTAW is generally done with automated equipment. Pulsing is used to control heat input or to apply greater current at specific points in the weld weave cycle. Pulse frequencies vary but often are in the 3 to 10 cycles per second range.

Some typical uses for manual pulsing, is for consumable insert root pass pipe welding, you use 1.5-2 pulses per second, and make sure you consume the insert with the high part of the pulse without overheating from the low part of the pulse. It can also be used at higher frequencies to constrict the arc, and weld faster or thicker materials.

thanks everyone, the info has been usefull, i will continue to play with the machine, i think it's the only way to learn about this process properly, what im trying to do is achieve a wide bead width with very little leg length ( 2mm aluminium lap weld) i can do this by balancing the AC to one side, but i think the pulse can help me to achieve

Send me your email address by text message on my cell phone (00971507682668)number. I'll send some good writeups on Pulsed GTAW welding.

Thanks and regards

If it moves, train it...if it doesn't move, calibrate it...if it isn't written down, it never happened!
