How do timber x braces compare to steel ones, Is there a minimum recommended width for the timber members. Do slender timber members have the capability to flex without cracking so that the assumption that only tension will be present in brace holds true.

Thanks

Steel is stiffer... and often for timber x-bracing, the members are loaded in compression. It's often easier to design/build the connection.
