Hello all,

Using NX2 under TC9.1.2.10

We work with big assemblies up to 12000 parts. My boss insists on having the machine we design totally assamble, which means at some point we have to open the complete assembly. This is about half an hour waiting time, and longer when we have some saving to do or loading errors.

We are working on our procedures to reduce the time, but we also think we could improve a lot with hardware and software changes. For instance, we are considering passing to linux and forget windows alltogether.

Any experience regarding time and big assemblies??

Hi,
are you already using simplified representations?

Regards

Well, we certaily use referencies so that we only load the final part in every item and not lines, planes, sketch etc

At the beginning we also use facets, but them dismiss it because when we load the assemblies is always to work with it, and facets are worth only to visualise and make pictures (no possible to take measures, etc,..)

We also use layers to avoid loading nuts and bolts, which are a big part of the components.

However, we are still working on it. Any suggestions wellcome!!

Any experience under other operating systems than windows?

Thanks in advance

Hi,
as far as I know, using 64-bits O.S. won't speed up anything, it will only allow for more informations to be kept in memory (i.e. more components, or more facets, etc...). But, if you use 64-bits O.S. with very large amount of RAM (32 GB or more), then you could possibly set up a virtual disk and load all the UG program and work in this virtual disk (i.e. in RAM !!!), thus having read/write operations something like 1000 times faster. Then I fear the processor will be your bottleneck...

In NX 5, the facet representations used in Assemblies will be based on the JT standard, which inaddition to providing a lightweight alternative for display purposes, also carries with it the wireframe information of the edges of the model so that you can take accurate measurments even between faceted components. Also the JT standard provides multiple levels-of-detail which automatically adjusts the 'quality' of the representation so that performance is improved when displaying an assembly and you are performing zooms, pans, rotations, etc.
