Tips 4 the P.E.

Hello,

Anyone have any good tips on how to study or what materials are helpful for the Structural 1 P.E. Exam?

How much bridge design is there? Should I concentrate on familiarizing myself with the AASHTO Specs for Highway bridges?

I got by on the SE 1 without doing any bridge-type problems. The exams are many times biased towards building structures vs. AASHTO.

There are numerous study books out there that you can purchase - check out the back classifieds on most engineering related magazines. Try to balance your studies between: analysis, concrete, steel, wood, masonry, building codes. Find out what code or codes your exam will cover by calling NCEES. They (NCEES) can also give you info on the exam - example problems, etc.

I agree with what JAE has noted and will only add that you may find a nice study guide at Professional Publications Inc (PPI) for the SE exam. This book is similar to the now famous Lindberg reference for the Civil Engineer's PE exam reference text. You can find PPI on the internet via a search engine, I don't recall the address.

to get all the specifics on the codes etc. Some of the best books to have are:
1)Alan Williams book on concrete for the exam
2)The Reinforced Masonry Engineering Handbook
3)NDS wood design textbook (Breyer)
4)All the req'd codes
Alan Williams also has a book on bridges and the Structural Engineering Reference Manual.

I took (and passed) last October's new SE1 exam. ;-)
I've also heard it varies on the amount of bridge problems it can have.

You should tab all your books and definitely get the NCEES practice exam.
