we are having problems with the racing tire we HAVE to use because it slips sideways (deforms excesively)in turns. Anybody figured out a way to make it more rigid? with the same wheel

Higher air pressure.

If the tyre is a specified maximum only, maybe a narrower tread will stay flatter on the road. Certainly a lower profile would help if allowed, but I doubt it is allowed

My first question is that you have diagnosed a problem down to this - but what was the original problem?

And a couple of other thoughts:

Give us some details to work with. What type of racing? What tire size are we talking about? What tires? Width of wheels? Anything that you think might be impacting the situation.

We are not only engineers, but racers, too. You need to formulate your question with more emphasis on details! Especially, since you state this is a mandated tire/wheel combo. Are all the others in you class of racing having the same problem?
If not, you might look into the suspension setup but, most probably, find out what the driver is doing to cause this "excessive" sliding. With so little information, that's my first bet.

All tires deform in corning at relatively high g forces. If it's a class thing, what's the problem? You looking for the "unfair advantage"?
