TO CALCULATE TRANSFORMER TANK AREA WHICH CONTRIBUTES TO HEAT LOSS BY RADIATION

Hello,

I am trying to calculate heat loss by radiation from Transformer Tank. For this i need to calculate the transformer tank area. I am not sure wheather all the 6 sides of the transfomer contribute to the heat loss by radiation. Please let me know the actual formula to calculate transformer tank area which contributes to heat loss by radiation. If some explaination can be provided that would be great.

You can avoid the bottom side as the temperature difference to ambient will be negligible. Heat transfer by radiation is governed by Stefan-Boltzman law, by which heat transfer varies as the difference of absolutre temperatures raised to fourth power.The area to be considered is not the absolute values but of the convolute over the outer area of radiating surface.In actual transformers,heat transfer by radiation is compratively low compared to that by convection.
