To Handle 100% Reactive Load

Gentlemen,

A spec of a 50 MVA, 230-13.8 kV stepdown power transformer associated with a Staic Var Control (SVC) system specifies "This Power Transformer shall be designed to handle 100% Reactive Load".

1)Could any member please explain about the special features of such a transformer?
2)Is it possible to replace this power transformer by a normal power transformer of identical ratings in case of a failure?

I can't think of a reason a transformer would care about the power factor of its load. The waveform of the SVC might be a concern though.
 
The SVC load is always capacitive, so I'd be concerned with what level the low side voltage gets to at maximum reactive load. It's voltage will be at its maximum level under these conditions.

If you looked at replacing it with a standard one, then do the calculation based on its impedance and see if the lowside voltage is excessive.
 
Voltage regulation of the power transformer is driven by the impedance and thus the power factor of the load served - does your specification detail the performance of this unit at almost 0 power factor?
