I would like to have solidworks show interferneces with mating parts to avoid the problem of tolerance stackups. I am using a simple example to start to understand how to do this... just a cylinder that fits into a tube. I can make the tube smaller than the cylinder and it finds that interference when I do the interference check, but when I make the part have a +/- .005" tolerance and I make the cylinder 1.000" and the tube opening 1.000" it says that nothing is interfering. Although it is obvious that if the tube was made at .995 and the cylinder at 1.005 the two would not mate. Thanks for any help! I am a beginner so keep that in mind!

If you have SolidWorks Pro or Premium, take a look at TolAnalyst.

I have SW 2010 pro... how do I get to the tolanalyst? and is there any special things I should know to get it to work right? Thanks a lot

TolAnalyst is an addin (Tools->addins). There's a tutorial for it under Help->SolidWorks Tutorials->Productivity Enhancement.

is it called something else? I look in addins and I see design checker... is that it?

Sorry, my bad. It's only in Premium. [banghead]

You could use clearance detection. It won't automatically pick up the tolerance. It will point you in areas that are less than a perscribe value though.

is there a way to buy the Tolanalyst tool seperate? I see there are a few other programs sold... any idea on price and opinions on other programs for solidworks vs. the Tolanaylst? Thanks

I haven't used it, but when you spec a sketch dimension or a dimension on a drawing, you can select fit, or fit with tolerance from the precision list box, and it will look up an iso fit for you.

Thanks guys... looks like I'm at a dead end here unless I purchase the tolanalyst or other program... appreciate the comments... have a good one!
