TORNADIC Wind Loads using ASCE 7-16

I have a project located in Clarksville, Tennessee & I have been asked about consideration for Tornadic Loads.

I used the ASCE Hazard Tool (https://ascehazardtool.org/) to determine if TORNADIC Loads shall be considered for Clarksville, Tennessee.

Based on the ASCE Hazard Tool, it seems that TORNADIC Loads are not an option for ASCE 7-16. However, it appears that TORNADIC Loads can be considered for ASCE 7-22 but not Applicable to Risk Category 2 when using ASCE 7-22.

I would just like to double check this tool regarding Tornadic Loads for this situation.

Comments/suggestions are appreciated.

Yep, tornadoes are explicitly excluded from consideration in ASCE 7-16 (26.14); however, the commentary provides limited design guidance for those seeking that additional resiliency. Remember that the commentary is not “mandatory.” The “option” is always there…

I’m pretty excited for the 7-22 tornado provisions. Haven’t yet had an opportunity to dig into them, but I believe that they are only applicable to RC 3&4 structures.

As always, check your governing IBC, first. Looks like Clarksville uses an amended 2018 IBC. Who knows, maybe those amendments include tornado requirements.

Agree with ANE91 except that I don't believe 7-16 "excluded" tornadic loads...they just hadn't been "invented" yet.
Under ASCE 7-16 you would use ICC 500 or perhaps FEMA 361 for guidance on tornado design should the owner request it.
