I work with a small soil mechanics laboratory, and we are considering purchasing a torsional ring shear machine. This device would determine the drained residual shear strength of cohesive soils as per ASTM D:6467. I would like feedback on the quality of results, and on demand... is there a need for this test? What do others charge for the test? Any help would be greatly appreciated as the price of this equipment is quite hefty for a firm of our size.

Thanks,

I do a lot of slope stability work in clays and always ask for ring shear testing. In some soils I get very different results (normally lower, sometimes half) to the direct shear test which, in my opinion, does not give accurate results for slowly moving residual slides. It is also a relatively quick and cheap test to do.
