Hello,
How do u transfer holes from one part to the mating part in an assembly? How do u do one hole at a time, and is there a transfer all holes command?

There are several ways to handle this but, you could use the skeleton based design method for this

Product
Location part
Piece 1
Piece 2

Add the points for hole location to Location part
Tools --> Publication --> pick points

Use the Assembly Hole command to drive hole through Piece 1 and Piece 2

is it necessary to publicate the points? I don't have any, because I created the holes with the hole option in part design. i use the assembly hole option in assembly, and i get the window of the hole creation option with hole dia, position sketch etc same as in part design, and another window asking what parts are affected, after filling in all the parameters i get topo error

I would say it's necessary, some will disagree. Publications will help keep the assembly stable. I use them for shared geometry and constraints.

Possibly you are getting the topo errors if you left the original hole in part. Can you upload a screen image?

If you have one of the tooling workbenches you could just position the bolt and let "drill components" feature do the drilling in all affected parts in the assembly. Another thought, can't you use assembly hole feature?

yes, i am using the assembly hole feature, i pick the ID surface on the ring with the holes, and i expect the holes to be drilled into the tube that goes over the ring, instead the hole dialog box comes up again, and asks for hole dia, hole location sketch etc etc, and another dialog box comes up with some questions about which parts are affected, i fill in the hole dia again, click on the affected parts, and click ok in the hole dia dialog box, and i a giant middle finger pops up on the screen (just kidding), i get a bunch of error msgs about unable to relimit etc,,,

Hi,

I wouldn't use Assembly Hole command...in fact, there are companies where is forbidden to use this....or any other command like this, for example symmetry (reasons are many and different).

I agree with Derek to use Publications, you can "link" the holes between two parts. I would do in this way separate holes for each mating part (you can try also copy-paste hole feature in the mating part, then change what is necessary to have the correct hole).

Fernando

i just want all the holes in the ring to show up in the mating tube, and i want to do this as simply as possible with the assembly hole command.
