Transfer of PE

I am preparing to take my PE in Illinois. I was planning on taking it this coming spring, at which time I will have 3.75 years of experience. Illinois recently passed a new law stating that you can take the test at any time, however you cannot recieve you PE until you have 4 years of experience.

I have been told that most states will not let me transfer my license if I take the exam prior to having 4 years of experience. Does anyone have any insite on this issue? Thanks in advance.

Yes, I can offer some insight.

The Montana State Board recently rejected a slew of comity applications because they took the exam prior to receiving 4 years experience. However, the state kindly explained to the applicants that they did qualify to take the exam and if they passed they could get their Montana PE license.

I'd hold off for another 6 months so you don't have to retake it again.

The other comment that I'll make is that most states require 8 years of experience, and 4 years is typically granted if you have an ABET-accredited engineering degree. Some states only give you 3 years credit for an ABET accredited engineering technology degree, and somes states will give you 1 or 2 years for post-graduate work.

Working on a Utah license, and they just have you show 4 years of experience after getting out of school, and have passing scores. New Mexico said your initial license needed to match the requirements they had at the time you recieved your license.

Are you absolutely sure about this? Did you verify this with the Board?

I frequent the web site and I see no provision for this. Based on past experience and reference Section 1380.25, (a) An applicant shall have acquired all experience prior to review by the Board.

The Board must approve you to sit for the exam and if you don’t have 4 or more years you cannot sit for the exam. You can take both the FE and PE together after 4 years not before.

When I first was told that I would be able to take it early, I did not believe the guy that told me. I called up Illinois State Board and they said I can take it any time, however I will not recieve my license until I have verification of 4 years of experience. So I went ahead and applied, and have recieved approval to sit for the exam. Since then I was informed about the issue of some states not acception the transfer.

The states rules are changing constantly. You're better off to wait 6 months until the next exam rather than risking lacking comity later on (which means you'd have to retake the test, which you don't want to do.)
